As New York Fashion Week kicks off, flowers and candles outside the designer’s store mark a tribute to a fashion maverick.

McQueen’s last show, at the Palais Omnisport, at Bercy, on the outskirts of Paris, was an extraordinary fusion of digital technology and dazzling design, simultaneously ‘streamed’ live around the world.
His inspirations came from Darwin’s “On The Origin of Species” and his theory of evolution, drew some references from the biblical Flood, posited the concept of human beings returning to the watery depths whence all human life sprung.
The colours and computerised prints were as vivid as the shoals of fish McQueen had seen on a recent scuba-diving holiday in The Maldives. The shoes were jewelled, barnacle-encrusted “hooves” which could have come from a sea-monster. The models’ faces were distorted with prosthetic “fins” and “gills”.
Backstage, before the show, McQueen seemed calm and confident. He was very happy with the collection; he thought it was one of his best. It was also his last.
He was set to reveal his latest Collection at Fashion Week 2010.

Tributes to Lee Alexander McQueen at New York Fashion Week Charity Gala
Stars take to the catwalk in Alexander McQueen creations in memory of the late designer, and in aid of Haiti.
A charity catwalk show at New York Fashion Week at the weekend, became a salute to the late British designer, Lee Alexander McQueen, who died suddenly at his London home this week.
The show, Fashion for Relief/Haiti, was organised by the British supermodel, Naomi Campbell, a global ambassador for the White Ribbon Alliance charity, and close friend of the designer, who said she was “devastated” by the news.
“It’s just so sad. I can’t believe it. He was the best,” she said. The list of more than 140 designers who donated clothes for the charity catwalk extravaganza was a roll-call of the biggest names in international fashion, including Versace, Gucci, Christian Dior, Burberry, Marc Jacobs, Donna Karan, Ralph Lauren, Giorgio Armani, Dolce & Gabbana, Jean Paul Gaultier, Tom Ford, Louis Vuitton, Manolo Blahnik, and Roberto Cavalli.
But the spotlight fell on “The Magnificent Seven” – a group of seven spectacular designs from McQueen’s last-ever collection, “Plato’s Atlantis”, originally shown during the Paris prêt-à-porter season last October.
